BTS Performs "Blue & Grey" | MTV Unplugged Presents: BTS via YouTube

On Tuesday, February 23rd, BTS made history by becoming the first K-Pop act to be featured exclusively live on the American television series MTV Unplugged Presents. The Grammy nominated, South Korean boy band, BTS, performed 5 tracks from their latest album, BE, along with a cover of Coldplay’s classic “Fix You”.

Since the late 80s, MTV Unplugged has had many incredible and talented musical artists such as Rod Stewert (1993), Kiss (1995), Jay-Z (2001), Alicia Keys (2005), Miley Cyrus (2014) and many more showcasing their live performances.

A few months prior to the exclusive performance, BTS released “BE”(Essential Edition) studio album under BigHit Entertainment and Columbia Records on November 20, 2020. The album consists of 7 songs including a skit.

Out of the 5 songs that were performed, Blue & Grey, was probably my favorite of them all. BTS member, Kim Taehyung, also known as V shared in an interview with Weverse his close personal truth behind Blue & Grey. V kicked off the ballad performance of Blue & Grey with his passionate and soothing voice.

Originally, when V wrote the lyrics for the track, he stated in an interview with Koreaboo, “I wrote “Blue & Grey” during my hardest times. It was a time when I debated on whether or not I should continue this career”. The fans of BTS, also known as ARMY, were heartbroken when they heard about the struggles one of the members was going through.

V also added, “It seemed difficult to enjoy work and the road I was on seemed meaningless. It felt like I was in a tunnel and I couldn’t see the exit. I think it’s correct to say that I couldn’t see the path that I was supposed to be on.”

BTS try to connect and relate with ARMY, and anyone, not only through their music, but also through their personalities. V told his fans that he was in a dark place when he wrote Blue & Grey.

After finding out the meaning behind the song, I felt like I wasn’t alone. I felt understood and heard. On the report of International The News, “The feelings he wanted to convey through his curated masterpiece revolved around self-discovery and support”.

Blue & Grey was a first-time debut that was written by V and originally meant to be on his upcoming solo mixtape. This track takes listeners on a journey of accepting the emotions of unhappiness and uncertainty.
