The 2021 78th Annual Golden Globe Award show was hosted this past Sunday after being delayed for two months. The nominees were announced on February 3. Many have been predicting the results since then based on stats and opinions, but no one can really know the outcomes at award shows just like the virtual side of the whole night.
This year Amy Poehler and Tina Fey hosted the event virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic which made things really different. But like any award show, it still matters to many fans. Here are some of the night's best moments that made it worth watching.
After Fey and Poehler’s opening monologue the awards began. The first winner of the night was Daniel Kaluuya who won Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah. He played Fred Hampton who was the Black Panther Party leader during the civil rights movements of the ’60s.
When Laura Dern announced Kaluuya’s win, he was shown on the screen clearly trying to give his acceptance speech until he realized he was muted. Dern seemed obviously confused and as she was walking off stage Kaluuya’s audio comes back, and he jokes around saying “You did me dirty!” He goes on to actually give his speech and talk about his role in the film. It was a humorous start for the award show!
Another highlight was the speech that Jane Fonda gave after winning The Cecil B. DeMille Award which is given to actors that have made an impact in the industry. She used her acceptance speech to express how grateful she is and about diversity.
Fonda talks about what she has experienced throughout her career. She calls out Hollywood as a whole saying that everyone should be included no matter what they look like or where they came from. She used her platform to give a voice to those who don’t have one and are being unrepresented.
Chadwick Boseman best known for his role in “Black Panther" won his first Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” He plays a highly talented jazz musician named Levee Green.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was Boseman’s last project before the actor passed away last year at 43 due to cancer. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf. She gave the audience an emotional speech about her husband expressing who he would thank and what he would say.
Lastly, director Cholé Zhao made history last night by being the second woman to win Best Director for her film “Nomaland.” Zhao was up against two more women making it the first time in history more than one woman in the category. She is also the first Asian woman to win this award making it a really huge deal.
Zhao talks about how she loves what she’s done and wants to inspire others to do the same. She also expresses how much the film “Nomaland” means to her. Her next project is “Eternals” a Marvel movie that is releasing later on this year in November. Maybe we’ll see Zhao again next year.
Although many things changed this year at the Golden Globes were still something to talk about.
