I recently watched a new movie and I thought it would be a fun idea to make a segment where I review movies that just came out, so here it is.
The first movie I will be reviewing is called The Unholy, this movie came out on April 2, 2021. It is about a journalist named Gerry Fenn (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who investigates a girl mute named Alice (played by newcomer, Cricket Brown) who is supposedly visited by the Virgin Mary. Alice then gains the ability to do impossible things such as making herself speak, healing her uncle from a sickness he had, and making a disabled little boy walk again. Everyone starts to praise Alice until they start noticing strange things occurring right after she heals someone.
This is an interesting film, but I do have a few things to say about it. Warning: there are spoilers ahead.
To be quite honest, it was good, but it could’ve been better. This movie starts off with a woman named Mary who is being hung for believing in the devil. The men punishing her are hammering this sort of doll-like mask into her face, but you don’t know that until they explain it in the middle of the movie. You’re left wondering what they were doing to her for a bit as they filmed it from the first person’s point of view. I feel like a better way to start this movie would’ve been if they showed the woman doing horrible things, them holding her accountable for it and then they punish her.
This movie would have been a lot scarier if they didn’t show Mary’s facel. There were some scenes where they just showed us a clothed figure, you can’t see her face at all, and she looked terrifying like that. I lost all my interest in the film as soon as they showed her in her doll-like mask. This movie was really good but it kind of feels like they were just rushing to finish it. This is all I’m going to say because I don’t want to spoil it more for you all.
I will say that they did a great job with the pop-up scenes, I jumped twice because I got caught off guard. The plot in general was good and so was the acting. The way Gerry Fenn figures out what’s really going on with Alice was interesting, and Cricket Brown did a fantastic job in playing Alice. She will definitely be entering the spotlight again very soon. It was also great seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan again, it’s safe to say he is still a heartthrob. Overall, I give this movie a 7/10.
